Mission

  1. a) To give a concept about different trends of pre-medieval, medieval and modern Bengali literature.
  2. b) To create a sense of historical analysis of literature.
  3. c) To be aware about the form, style and its indication towards future direction.
  4. d) To give a concept of origin and development of Bengali language.

 Programme Educational Objectives : (PEOs)

To give a holistic idea of the subject as well as to develop and to grow the analytical ability of the students, empowering them to address issues on language and literature with contemporary points of view.

 

Programme-Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

A Student, who enrolls in B.A Hons. in Bengali, studies the language having a tradition and glorious history of more than 1300 years.  He/She learns about the evolution of Bengali language since the Bengal Renaissance and students are privileged to know about contribution of various literary greats and academics.

Course Outcomes

Here are the significant features of BNGA (CBCS) syllabus.

History of Bengali literature is included in CC1/1, CC2/3 and CC3/5 paper of the present syllabus. The specific topic of CC1/1 paper is History of Bengali Literature of pre-medieval and medieval period. From Charyapadas to various Mongalkavyas, Vaishnava literature, Bengali literature of translation from Sanskrit Ethics and Puranas, Shaktapadavalis, in short all genre of Bangla medieval literature are discussed here. Bengali literature of 19th century renaissance period, is the main topic of syllabus for CC2/3 paper. How the characteristics of renaissance encouraged poets and writers to create different genres of it, such as poetry, drama, novel, essays, is the central topic of discussion of this paper.

 

CC3/5 paper focuses on 20th century Bangla literature. A special purpose of this paper is to introduce Rabindranath and his writings with students and along with this, eminent modern poets and writers of this period are introduced.

 

Linguistics: Linguistics is concerned with the nature of language and communication. It deals with both the particular language (Bangla), and the search for general properties, common to all language. CC1/2 and CC3/5, these two papers specifically discuss on linguistics. Classification of sounds, principles of Bengali morphology, Semantics, historical classification of languages, Indo-Aryan language, different stages and features of Bengali language. These are the areas of                          discussion in our syllabus.

 

Rhetoric and Prosody (CC4/9): Rhetoric is the art of persuasion through communication. It is a form of discourse that appeals to people’s emotion and logic in order to motivate.

Prosody is the rhythm, stress and intonation of speech, it is an important part of verse and both are the pillars of language and literature.

Poetry and Poetics : Poetry and poetics are our topic of discussion in CC2/4 module 1, CC4/8, and CC13. In the first one, a collection of poems is taught according to the chronology of the history of Bengali poetry from approximately 12th century to the 21st century. The second one is about middle age poetry and the last one is about selected poems of eminent poets of 19th and 20th century.

Reading poetry is a great way to learn about different cultures and traditions from the world. By exploring poems of different ages, a student of literature can understand better, the different beliefs and philosophy of different ages or periods. Students learn different style and genre of poetry. They also learn about different poetic forms and techniques.

 

CC14 – The purpose of such comparative study of literature is to discover the common areas among different literature analyses the similarities and dissimilarities and parallels between two or more than two literature. They can get familiar with poets and poetry of different language and philosophies.

 

 

Departmental Activities with Snapshots

The Bengali department adopts various plans along with syllabus-oriented studies, for the academic excellence of students. Besides regular educational activities, our department organizes different seminars and workshops on relevant literary topics as well as social issues. We arrange educational tours and prepare our students for quiz competitions, poster making competitions, group discussions, so that they can keep pace with the time.
