Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

  1. Impart training to build awareness on the basics of zoology and to understand forms and functionalities of the animal kingdom.
  2. Demonstrate recognizable expertise to conduct field surveys on ecological and behavioural aspects, data analysis and report preparation.
  3. Provide an expertise in the domain helpful for higher education and research.
  4. Help to enhance the entrepreneurial and industrial skills to set up agro-based small-scale industries like apiculture, sericulture, ornamental fish farming etc.
  5. Provide hands-on training on instrumentation related to applied biology.
  6. Exhibit persistent learning and adaptive capability in a constantly changing field of molecular biology through professional development.

 

Program-Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

At the end of the programme a student will be capableof –

  1. Preparation of key to genera leading to species identification of the notable faunal taxa.
  2. Entrepreneurship of agro-based small-scale industries like apiculture, sericulture, ornamental fish farming etc.
  3. Conduct field surveys on ecological and behavioural aspects of any desired animal. Analysis of the collected data and preparation of reports.
  4. Conduct tests by using different modern instruments related to cell biology, genetics and molecular biology.
  5. Understand the environmental issues leading to climate change and global warming.
  6. Mitigate problems related to human-animal conflicts and proper implementation of the environmental Acts & Laws.
  7. Seek employment with the help of gathered knowledge and training in the field of education, public sector, NGOs.

Course Outcomes

Paper CC1: Non Chordata I (Protists to Pseudocoelomates)

Students will acquire knowledge about basics of classification, systematics and taxonomy. They will also have learning about classification and biology of acoelomate and pseducoelomate taxa like Protozoa, Metazoa, Porifera, Cnidaria, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, and Nematoda. Knowledge regarding life cycle, pathogenicity, and control measures of few parasites will also be gained.

Paper CC2: Molecular Biology

Students will be learning about nucleic acids, DNA replication, transcription, translation, post-transcriptional modification, gene regulation and DNA repair mechanisms. Knowledge regarding various molecular techniques like PCR, Western and Southern blot, Northern blot etc. will also be gained.

 

Paper CC3: Non Chordata – II (All Coelomate Phyla)

Students will be gaining knowledge about the evolution and coelom and theories postulated by various scientists. They will also have learning about classification and biology of all the invertebrate coelomate phyla like Annelida, Arthropoda, Onychophora, Mollusca, Echinodermata, and Hemichordata.

 

Paper CC4: Cell Biology

Students will understand the ultrastructure, composition and functions of plasma membrane, cytoplasmic organelles, cytoskeleton, and nucleus. They will acquire knowledge about cell cycle and its regulation. Knowledge regarding cell signalling transduction pathways. They will also learn to apply stain on different cells and prepare permanent slides.

 

 

 

Paper CC5: Chordata

Students will be learning about classification and biology of vertebrate taxa like Protochordata, Agnatha, Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, and Mammalia. They will also learn some special topics like accessory respiratory organ in fishes, parental care in fishes and amphibia, metamorphosis and paedomorphosis, biting mechanisms of snakes, bird migration, and echolocation in bats.

 

Paper CC6: Animal Physiology: Controlling & Co-ordinating System

Students will understand the structure and types of tissues, bones and cartilages. They will also learn the histology and function of nervous system, muscular system, reproductive system, and endocrine system. Detailed knowledge about hormones and their classification, signal transduction pathways, neuroendocrine control will also be gained.

 

Paper CC7: Fundamentals of Biochemistry

Students will be gaining knowledge about structure, classification and biological importance of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. They will also understand the nature, mechanism, and kinetics of enzyme action. Knowledge regarding instrumentation like paper chromatography etc. will also be gained.

 

Paper SEC-A(1): Apiculture

Students will understand the identification of Apis and non-Apis bee species, their biology and social organization. Basics of apiculture practices like artificial rearing of bees, methods of extraction of honey etc. will be learnt. They will have an idea about entrepreneurship in bee keeping industry.

 

Paper SEC-A(2): Sericulture

Students will be learning about the biology, types and distribution of silkworm species. They will understand the basics of rearing silkworm, spinning and harvesting of cocoons. Knowledge regarding entrepreneurship in sericulture industry will also be gained.

 

Paper CC8: Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates

Students will be gaining knowledge about the structure and functions of different systems such as integumentary, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, urinogenital, skeletal, nervous and sensory organs in a comparative way among the vertebrate groups.

 

Paper CC9: Animal Physiology: Life Sustaining Systems

Students will be learning about physiology of digestion, respiration, circulation, thermoregulation and osmoregulation. They will also learn the structure and functions of heart and kidney. Knowledge regarding determination of ABO blood group, estimation of haemoglobin, monitoring of blood pressure by digital meter will also be gained.

 

Paper CC10: Immunology

Students will acquire knowledge about basics of immune system and its types. They will also develop knowledge about structure and functions of antigens, immunoglobulins, MHC molecules, and cytokines. Hypersensitivity reactions and types of vaccines will also be learnt.

 

Paper SEC-B(1): Aquarium Fisheries

Students will learn the basics of aquarium fish keeping. They will gain knowledge about biology of aquarium fishes, natural and artificial feed, fish transportation, and maintenance of aquarium. Potential scope of aquarium fishes as cottage industry will also be learnt.

 

Paper SEC-B(2): Medical Diagnosis

Students will be gaining knowledge about the diagnosis methods used for analysis of bloods and urine samples. They will also gain knowledge about infectious and non-infectious diseases. Methods involved in clinical biochemistry and microbiology will also be learnt.

 

Paper CC11: Ecology

Students will be learning about different aspects of population, community and ecosystem ecology. As part of applied ecology they will gain knowledge about types and levels of biodiversity, wildlife conservation, protected area network, concept of corridor, Indian wildlife act and rules. They will also learn to use various tools for conducting field study.

 

Paper CC12: Principle of Genetics

Students will be gaining knowledge about fundamental genetics like Mendelian inheritance, linkages, crossing over, mutations, sex determination, extra-chromosomal inheritance, transposable genetic elements etc. They will also understand chi-square and pedigree analysis.

 

Paper DSE-A(1): Parasitology

Students will acquire knowledge about basics of parasitism, parasite, parasitoid, vectors and host-parasitic relationship. They will also have learning about morphology, life cycle, epidemiology, pathogenicity, diagnosis and treatment of parasitic protists, plathyhelminths, nematodes, arthropods and vertebrates.

 

Paper DSE-A(2): Biology of Insects

Students will understand the classification scheme of insects as a whole. They will also have learning about general morphology and physiology of insects. Knowledge regarding insect society, insect-plant interaction and insects as mechanical and biological vectors will also be gained.

 

Paper DSE-B(1): Endocrinology

Students will be learning various aspects of endocrine system. They will also learn classification and transportation of hormones, structure and functions of hypothalamus and peripheral endocrine glands. Knowledge regarding regulation of hormone action will also be gained.

 

Paper DSE-B(2): Reproductive Biology

Students will be learning various aspects of reproductive endocrinology. They will also learn functional anatomy of male and female reproduction. They will also understand the reproductive health and assisted reproductive technologies.

 

Paper CC13: Developmental Biology

Students will be gaining knowledge about early, late and post embryonic developments. They will also learn implications of developmental biology in related fields like in vitro fertilization, stem cell therapy etc.

 

Paper CC14: Evolutionary Biology

Students will be learning various aspects of evolution like origin of life, geological time scale, natural selection, speciation, population genetics, and extinction. They will also learn to construct and interpret phylogenetic tree and dendogram.

 

Paper DSE-A(1): Animal Cell Biotechnology

Students will be learning about the concept and scope of biotechnology in modern times. They will also understand various techniques involved in gene manipulation. Knowledge regarding animal cell culture and fermentation will be gained.

 

Paper DSE-A(2): Animal Biotechnology

Students will be gaining knowledge about genomic organization of model organisms E. coli and Drosophila. They will also learn various molecular techniques associated with gene manipulation and animal cell culture and their applications.

 

Paper DSE-B(1): Animal Behaviour & Chronobiology

Students will be learning various aspects of behavioural patterns, social organization, mate choice, and conflicts. They will also learn chronobiology and types of biological rhythms. Knowledge regarding geotaxisand phototaxis behaviour will also be gained.

 

Paper DSE-B(2): Fish & Fisheries

Students will acquire knowledge about taxonomy, classification and biology of fishes. They will also learn types of fisheries and various aquaculture techniques.
